Evacuation orders for Barkervillie, Bowron Lake Park Area and Bowron Area have been downgraded to alerts, paving the way for residents to head home Friday, July 26.

The Barkerville Highway, Highway 26, has also been reopened.

The areas were evacuated on July 21 and July 22 due to the Antler Creek wildfire.

The Antler Creek wildfire, also known as the Groundhog Complex, is a fire of note, and remains out of control. There are 20 wildfires included in the Groundhog Complex, including the Antler Creek wildfire.

The BC Wildfire Service said the precipitation received so far and forecasted over the next few days should translate into subdued fire behaviour for the Groundhog Complex.

"This will provide crews with favourable firefighting conditions to secure the perimeter and target areas minimizing growth towards priority values, infrastructure and property, noted BCWS in a Friday update.

There are currently 196 firefighters responding to the Groundhod Complex, including structure protection personnel. There are also 19 danger tree fallers, six helicopters and thirteen pieces of heavy equipment.

"BC Wildfire Service resources are working with the Cariboo Regional District, the District of Wells, Barkerville Historic Town and Park and local emergency services staff."

A fire camp has been set up in Quesnel and all operational staff will be working from there.

The District of Wells has also rescinded the evacuation order to an evacuation alert.

Barkerville Historic Town & Park is not damaged, but needs time to reopen.
