Stars from both sides of the Atlantic and beyond walked the red carpet Sunday for the British Academy Film Awards, where atom-bomb epic 㽶ƵֱOppenheimer㽶Ƶֱ could smash a 53-year-old record if it makes good on its field-leading 13 nominations.

Christopher Nolan 㽶Ƶֱs biopic of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer is up for trophies including best film, best director and best actor for star Cillian Murphy. A good night could see it surpass the record nine awards won by 㽶ƵֱButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid㽶Ƶֱ at the BAFTAs in 1971.

It faces stiff competition in what㽶Ƶֱs widely considered a vintage year for cinema. Gothic fantasia 㽶ƵֱPoor Things㽶Ƶֱ has 11 nominations, including best film, director for Yorgos Lanthimos and actress for Emma Stone. Historical epic 㽶ƵֱKillers of the Flower Moon㽶Ƶֱ and Holocaust drama 㽶Ƶֱ The Zone of Interest㽶Ƶֱ have nine nominations each for the prizes, officially called the EE BAFTA Film Awards.

The ceremony, hosted by 㽶ƵֱDoctor Who㽶Ƶֱ star David Tennant, will be a glitzy, British-accented appetizer for Hollywood㽶Ƶֱs Academy Awards, closely watched for hints about who might win at the Oscars on March 10.

Nominees including Bradley Cooper, Carey Mulligan, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Rosamund Pike, Ryan Gosling and Ayo Edebiri were all expected on the red carpet at London㽶Ƶֱs Royal Festival Hall, along with presenters that include Andrew Scott, Cate Blanchett, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba.

Guest of honor will be Prince William, in his role as president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. He㽶Ƶֱll be without his wife, Kate, who is recovering after abdominal surgery last month.

Newcomer Dominic Sessa, a best supporting actor nominee for his role as a troubled high school student in 㽶ƵֱThe Holdovers,㽶Ƶֱ said he was 㽶Ƶֱhaving the time of my life㽶Ƶֱ on the awards circuit.

Other leading contenders include French courtroom drama 㽶ƵֱAnatomy of a Fall,㽶Ƶֱ boarding school coming-of-age drama 㽶ƵֱThe Holdovers㽶Ƶֱ and Leonard Bernstein biopic 㽶ƵֱMaestro㽶Ƶֱ 㽶Ƶֱ each with seven nominations 㽶Ƶֱ and grief-flecked love story 㽶ƵֱAll of Us Strangers㽶Ƶֱ with six. Barbed class-war dramedy 㽶ƵֱSaltburn 㽶Ƶֱ has five nominations.

㽶ƵֱBarbie,㽶Ƶֱ one half of 2023㽶Ƶֱs 㽶ƵֱBarbenheimer㽶Ƶֱ box office juggernaut and the year㽶Ƶֱs top-grossing film, also has five nominations but missed out on nods for best picture and best director. Many saw the omission of 㽶ƵֱBarbie㽶Ƶֱ director Greta Gerwig 㽶Ƶֱ for both the BAFTAs and the Oscars 㽶Ƶֱ as a major snub.

The best film race pits 㽶ƵֱOppenheimer㽶Ƶֱ against 㽶ƵֱPoor Things,㽶Ƶֱ 㽶ƵֱKillers of the Flower Moon,㽶Ƶֱ 㽶ƵֱAnatomy of a Fall㽶Ƶֱ and 㽶ƵֱThe Holdovers.㽶Ƶֱ

The BAFTAs also celebrate home-grown cinema with a separate category of best British film, an eclectic slate that includes 㽶ƵֱSaltburn㽶Ƶֱ 㽶Ƶֱ snubbed at the Oscars but embraced by the U.K. academy 㽶Ƶֱ alongside imperial epic 㽶ƵֱNapoleon,㽶Ƶֱ south London romcom 㽶ƵֱRye Lane㽶Ƶֱ and chocolatier origin story 㽶ƵֱWonka,㽶Ƶֱ among others.

Britain㽶Ƶֱs film academy introduced changes to increase the awards㽶Ƶֱ diversity in 2020, when no women were nominated as best director for the seventh year running and all 20 nominees in the lead and supporting performer categories were white.

However, there is only one woman among this year㽶Ƶֱs six best-director nominees: Justine Triet for 㽶ƵֱAnatomy of a Fall.㽶Ƶֱ Gerwig, Emerald Fennell for 㽶ƵֱSaltburn㽶Ƶֱ and Celine Song for star-crossed romance 㽶ƵֱPast Lives㽶Ƶֱ all failed to make the list.

A woman of color could take the best actress BAFTA for the first time, with Fantasia Barrino for 㽶ƵֱThe Color Purple㽶Ƶֱ and Vivian Oparah for 㽶ƵֱRye Lane㽶Ƶֱ nominated alongside Sandra Hüller for 㽶ƵֱAnatomy of a Fall,㽶Ƶֱ Mulligan for 㽶ƵֱMaestro,㽶Ƶֱ Margot Robbie for 㽶ƵֱBarbie㽶Ƶֱ and Stone for 㽶ƵֱPoor Things.㽶Ƶֱ

German actress Hüller, who also was up for best supporting actress for her work in 㽶ƵֱThe Zone of Interest,㽶Ƶֱ said she was just 㽶Ƶֱtrying to be calm.㽶Ƶֱ

No British performers are nominated in the best-actor category, but Ireland is represented by Murphy for 㽶ƵֱOppenheimer㽶Ƶֱ and Barry Keoghan for 㽶ƵֱSaltburn.㽶Ƶֱ They㽶Ƶֱre up against Cooper for 㽶ƵֱMaestro,㽶Ƶֱ Colman Domingo for civil rights biopic 㽶ƵֱRustin,㽶Ƶֱ Paul Giamatti for 㽶ƵֱThe Holdovers㽶Ƶֱ and Teo Yoo for 㽶ƵֱPast Lives.㽶Ƶֱ

Ukraine war documentary 㽶Ƶֱ20 Days in Mariupol,㽶Ƶֱ produced by The Associated Press and PBS 㽶ƵֱFrontline,㽶Ƶֱ is nominated for best documentary and best film not in the English language.

㽶ƵֱEvery step of this journey is a miracle,㽶Ƶֱ said filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov, who captured the harrowing reality of life in the besieged city with an AP team. 㽶ƵֱWe represent not just this city, not just Mariupol, but all Ukrainians.㽶Ƶֱ

The ceremony is set to include musical performances by 㽶ƵֱTed Lasso㽶Ƶֱ star Hannah Waddingham and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, the latter singing her 2001 hit 㽶ƵֱMurder on the Dancefloor,㽶Ƶֱ which shot back up the charts after featuring in 㽶ƵֱSaltburn.㽶Ƶֱ

Actress Samantha Morton will receive the academy㽶Ƶֱs highest honor, the BAFTA Fellowship, and film curator June Givanni, founder of the June Givanni PanAfrican Cinema Archive, will be honored for outstanding British contribution to cinema.

Sunday㽶Ƶֱs ceremony will be broadcast on BBC One in the U.K. from 1900GMT, and on streaming service BritBox in the U.S., Canada, Australia and South Africa.
