When people hear the word opera, they often immediately think of dying heroines, extravagant tragedy and yes, the horned hats. Opera Kelowna turned that vision on its heel last Friday evening when they put the fun in fundraiser with their Bohemian Masquerade at the Coast Capri Hotel.

It was an event like no other, styled as a 19th century Parisian street scene complete with musicians and performers, artists and poets, food and wine. Guests arrived in their best bohemian fashions and enjoyed the eclectic mix of opera and jazz, modern dance and ballroom classics, even a fashion show. Silent auction items were on offer as well as live auction packages. In short, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

Artist director Alexandra Babbel and her hard-working crew created an environment that was filled with visual delight and engagement while also providing opportunity for socializing and enjoying the rich setting.

All proceeds from this event will be used to help produce free outdoor concerts throughout the Central Okanagan, a summer training program for students, and Opera KelownaÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s main-stage production, PucciniÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s La boheme, this coming August.

This was the fifth annual fundraiser for the Opera Kelowna Society, each of which has been just as creative and magical in its own way. They are to congratulated on both the quality of these events as well as the work they do to bring operatic culture to the Okanagan Valley.

Last but not least, a hearty well done goes to all who attended the Bohemian Masquerade and made it a success. Opera Kelowna is fortunate to have such strong support from this community. After all, who doesnÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™t like to have fun while helping fund a good cause. Bravo.
