Guillermo del Toro㽶Ƶֱs Cold War-era, Canadian-shot fairytale 㽶ƵֱThe Shape of Water㽶Ƶֱ swam away with a leading seven Golden Globe nominations Monday, while the Canadian-directed HBO drama 㽶ƵֱBig Little Lies㽶Ƶֱ led the television categories with six nods.

In what㽶Ƶֱs been seen as a wide-open Oscar race so far, several films followed closely behind 㽶ƵֱThe Shape of Water,㽶Ƶֱ including Steven Spielberg㽶Ƶֱs Pentagon Papers drama 㽶ƵֱThe Post,㽶Ƶֱ with six nominations, including best actress for Meryl Streep and best actor for Tom Hanks. Martin McDonagh㽶Ƶֱs revenge drama 㽶ƵֱThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri㽶Ƶֱ also got a major boost in the nominations announced Monday in Beverly Hills, California, with six nods, including best actress for Frances McDormand and supporting actor for Sam Rockwell.

But as the most prominent platform yet in Hollywood㽶Ƶֱs awards season to confront the post-Harvey Weinstein landscape, the Globes also enthusiastically supported Ridley Scott㽶Ƶֱs J. Paul Getty drama 㽶ƵֱAll the Money in the World.㽶Ƶֱ Acclaimed Canadian actor Christopher Plummer, who replaced Kevin Spacey in the film just last month, was nominated for best supporting actor. Scott was also nominated for best director and Michelle Williams for best actress.

A rough cut of the film was screened for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the Globes. Scott is quickly reediting the movie to eradicate Spacey, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by numerous men.

The nominees for best picture drama are: the tender young romance 㽶ƵֱCall Me By Your Name,㽶Ƶֱ Christopher Nolan㽶Ƶֱs World War II epic 㽶ƵֱDunkirk,㽶Ƶֱ 㽶ƵֱThe Post,㽶Ƶֱ 㽶ƵֱThe Shape of Water㽶Ƶֱ and 㽶ƵֱThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.㽶Ƶֱ

㽶ƵֱThe Shape of Water㽶Ƶֱ was shot in Toronto and Hamilton.

The nominees for best picture comedy or musical are: James Franco㽶Ƶֱs 㽶ƵֱThe Disaster Artist,㽶Ƶֱ Jordan Peele㽶Ƶֱs horror sensation 㽶ƵֱGet Out,㽶Ƶֱ Greta Gerwig㽶Ƶֱs coming-of-age tale 㽶ƵֱLady Bird,㽶Ƶֱ the upcoming musical 㽶ƵֱThe Greatest Showman,㽶Ƶֱ and the Tonya Harding comic-drama 㽶ƵֱI, Tonya.㽶Ƶֱ

Despite considerable backlash, 㽶ƵֱGet Out㽶Ƶֱ ended up on the comedy side of the Globes. It was submitted that way by Universal Pictures. Peele himself slyly commented on the controversy, calling his social critique of latent racism 㽶Ƶֱa documentary.㽶Ƶֱ Though the Globes passed over Peele㽶Ƶֱs script, newcomer Daniel Kaluuya was nominated for best actor in a comedy.

Though some predicted and feared an acting field lacking diversity, the nominees were fairly inclusive. Denzel Washington (㽶ƵֱRoman J. Israel, Esq.㽶Ƶֱ), Mary J. Blige (㽶ƵֱMudbound㽶Ƶֱ), Hong Chau (㽶ƵֱDownsizing㽶Ƶֱ) and Octavia Spencer (㽶ƵֱThe Shape of Water㽶Ƶֱ) were among the 30 film acting nominees.

In the television categories, the Emmy-winning 㽶ƵֱBig Little Lies,㽶Ƶֱ which is directed by Montreal㽶Ƶֱs Jean-Marc Vallee, earned a number of acting nods (Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard) as well as best limited series. (HBO recently announced a second season for 㽶ƵֱBig Little Lies,㽶Ƶֱ which will change its category in other awards shows.)

Other nominees with Canadian connections include Toronto-born 㽶ƵֱWill and Grace㽶Ƶֱ star Eric McCormack for best actor in a musical or comedy series, the Canadian co-production 㽶ƵֱThe Breadwinner㽶Ƶֱ for best animated film and the Alberta-shot series 㽶ƵֱFargo㽶Ƶֱ for TV㽶Ƶֱs best limited series or motion picture. 㽶ƵֱThe Handmaid㽶Ƶֱs Tale,㽶Ƶֱ based on Canadian author Margaret Atwood㽶Ƶֱs acclaimed novel, also received several nominations, including best television drama.

FX㽶Ƶֱs Bette Davis and Joan Crawford chronicle 㽶ƵֱFeud: Bette and Joan㽶Ƶֱ landed four nominations, including nods for Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon. Amazon㽶Ƶֱs just-debuted 㽶ƵֱThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel㽶Ƶֱ scored several nods, including best comedy series. Also with numerous nominations were Netflix㽶Ƶֱs 㽶ƵֱStranger Things,㽶Ƶֱ and NBC㽶Ƶֱs 㽶ƵֱThis Is Us.㽶Ƶֱ

Left out were frequent Globes-nominees 㽶ƵֱHouse of Cards㽶Ƶֱ and 㽶ƵֱTransparent,㽶Ƶֱ two of the TV affected by the cascading fallout of sexual harassment allegations in the wake of Harvey Weinstein㽶Ƶֱs ouster. It㽶Ƶֱs been an omnipresent component of this year㽶Ƶֱs awards season, including Monday. As usual, the nominations were partly announced on NBC㽶Ƶֱs 㽶ƵֱToday㽶Ƶֱ show, where Matt Lauer was recent fired following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Gary Oldman, nominated for best actor for his Winston Churchill in 㽶ƵֱDarkest Hour,㽶Ƶֱ said it㽶Ƶֱs cast an unusual pall over the season.

㽶ƵֱHow should we celebrate? Well, I don㽶Ƶֱt think any of it㽶Ƶֱs funny, so I guess that people will stay away from it in the ceremony,㽶Ƶֱ said Oldman by phone Monday. 㽶ƵֱIt㽶Ƶֱs evolution, and it㽶Ƶֱs good that we sort of start to check ourselves about what we do and what we say and how we do it and how we say it to people, so I think it㽶Ƶֱs ultimately a good thing. But I can㽶Ƶֱt see too much of this coming up in (the show), up there on the platform, as it were, on the podium. It㽶Ƶֱs not something to joke about, I don㽶Ƶֱt think.㽶Ƶֱ

The nominees were announced from Beverly Hills after still-burning fires ravaged Southern California for the past week. The Thomas Fire has destroyed some 790 structures and forced thousands to evacuate their homes, with the blazes even entering the nearby neighbourhood of Bel Air.

The Globes haven㽶Ƶֱt traditionally predicted the Oscars, but they did last January. The Globes best-picture winners 㽶Ƶֱ 㽶ƵֱMoonlight㽶Ƶֱ and 㽶ƵֱLa La Land㽶Ƶֱ 㽶Ƶֱ both ultimately ended up on the stage for the final award of the Oscars, with 㽶ƵֱMoonlight㽶Ƶֱ emerging victorious only after the infamous envelope flub. The press association, which has worked in recent years to curtail its reputation for odd choices, is composed of approximately 90 freelance international journalists.

The last Globes broadcast, hosted by Jimmy Fallon, averaged 20 million viewers, an upswing of 8 per cent, according to Nielsen. This year, Fallon㽶Ƶֱs NBC late-night partner, Seth Meyers, will host the January 7 ceremony.

No Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement recipient has yet been chosen. Last year㽶Ƶֱs honoree, Streep, spoke forcefully against the then President-elect Donald Trump, shortly before his inauguration, leading him to criticize the actress as 㽶Ƶֱoverrated.㽶Ƶֱ This year, she 㽶Ƶֱ along with Spielberg and Hanks 㽶Ƶֱ return with a pointed and timely drama, 㽶ƵֱThe Post,㽶Ƶֱ about the power of the press to counter lies emanating from the White House.
