Candy Cane Lane lights up for its 14th year collecting non-perishable food donations in Kelowna.

John Sharhon has decked out his from the yard on Collison Road for another run of Candy Cane Lane in Kelowna's Rutland community.

"Christmas is about lights," Sharhon said. "When you saw the big old Christmas bulbs on a house you'd go, 'Oh wow!'"

Sharhon has been decorating his house for over three decades, but the street joined in to make Candy Cane Lane 14 years ago on the initiative of some neighbourhood kids.

"They came to me and said, 'What do you think? Will it work?' And I say we've already got the lights."

The annual holiday event collects non-perishable food donations. Sharhon said they are supporting the Women's Shelter, Freedom's Door, the Salvation Army and Spring Valley Elementary School, the alma mater of the kids who started it.

"We've gone from just helping [Spring Valley Elementary] with their breakfast program to helping them with their Christmas hampers. I think this year they said they're doing 48 hampers."

Sharhon said donations have been slow to come in this year, but he hopes to see lots of people out on Saturday, Dec. 14 for a little community fun. Around 6:30 p.m. Tim Hortons will be at Candy Cane Lane handing out hot chocolate and Santa will be around for some photos.

Non-perishable food items can be dropped off in the collection box at the corner of Collison and Gramiak roads until Dec. 31.

Lights displays turn on each day between 4 and 5 p.m.
