No bones about it: Summerland's family of skeletons return

Slim and Boneita Peskelly are up to their antics in Trout Creek

The skeletons are out of the closet and in the yard once again at their home on Nixon Road in Summerland.

Slim and Boneita Peskelly, a pair of skeletons, make their appearance at the Pescada family home each year in October. This is the sixth year they have been out for Halloween.

Heather Pescada works with the skeletons, staging them in a variety of poses.

This year, they got involved with municipal politics, as Slim dressed as Mayor Doug Holmes. They stayed away from provincial politics and did not have campaign signs or promises in advance of the Oct. 19 provincial election. After the election, they had stickers showing they had voted, but they refused to disclose which candidate they had supported.

On Oct. 26, they are scheduled to make a trek to the Summerland Museum for the Monsters at the Museum and Nightmare at the Museum events.

However, it has not been all fun and games for the skeleton couple.

Earlier this month, Slim attempted to jump into a swimming pool, but missed, breaking his harm. This required medical care.

Pescada adds that the skeletons are not made of actual human bones, but instead are plastic. As a result, they can be repaired painlessly, and will then be ready to participate in their next adventures.

The skeletons have a social conscience and this year they have been collecting donations for the Summerland Food Bank and Resource Centre. Pescada said she hopes to receive additional donations on Halloween evening, on Oct. 31, when visitors come to the neighbourhood.

In addition to their annual Halloween-themed antics, the skeletons have also taken on other causes.

In the spring of 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Slim and Boneita were put on display with a variety of safety messages as they self-isolated in the yard.
