With summer fast approaching, the Barrett family might be now in the midst of making summer vacation plans.
But for Jono and Phoenix Barrett and their two children, their initial priority is a trip to Kelowna to attend the three-day convention for Jehovah's Witness followers at Prospera Place this weekend (June 14-16).
The Vernon family will be among the 5,500 delegates attending the convention.
"My wife and I along with our two boys always enjoy attending the annual convention," said Jono Barrett.
"We're all impacted by negative news. An event that combines good friends and a positive message lets us slow life down and take a meaningful breath."
Derek McCoy, local spokesperson for Johovah's Witnesses, acknowledges the support of the local hostel industry, Tourism Kelowna and Prospera Place venue staff to stage the convention.
Lisanne Ballantyne, CEO and president of Tourism Kelowna, said conferences of this scale create a major economic impact on the local economy.
"They support our local businesses, accommodations and experiences as well as introduce visitors to our destination," said Ballantyne.
"We look forward to welcoming (JW Convention) guests to enjoy exploring our city once again."
The theme of this year's convention is, 'Declare the Good News.'
Jehovah's Witnesses believe God, Jehovah, is the supreme God and Jesus Christ is his agent for reconciling sinners to God.
Witnesses also believe they are living in the final days before Christ's presence will establish the kingdom of God on earth.
