An Okanagan non-profit is now able to help more animals find loving homes and ensure they receive essential care and attention before adoption thanks to a $40,000 grant.

The adoption prep grant from PetSmart Charities was awarded to the Okanagan Humane Society (OHS) to help with the non-profits in-store adoption program at PetSmart Kelowna.

Adoption prep grants are eligible to be awarded to select PetSmart Charities adoption partners that have successfully completed at least 100 adoptions within a PetSmart store over the past year.

According to OHS volunteer president Romany Runnalls, last year the charity surpassed this milestone, closing out 2024 with 150 in-store adoptions.

Runnalls said part of this success is due to OHS adoption program lead Jamie Walsh.

Jeremy Hoegg with PetSmart Kelowna, is a key advocate for OHS and provided a strong endorsement during the grant application process.

The $40,000 grant will allow OHS to host additional adoption events, cover pre-adoption veterinary care, support volunteer training, provide behavioural resources for pets, and launch a post-adoption support program to ensure lasting success for both animals and adopters.

Last year OHS helped more than 4,000 animals through its rescue and pet assistance programs, reinforcing its commitment to providing rescue services, low-income spay/neuter initiatives, and emergency medical care to local animals throughout the greater Okanagan area, explained Runnalls.
