A look back at Kelowna's past: Capri Mall

A look back in time
old-kelowna-22
These are aerial photos from 1959 and 1970s of the Capri mall and surrounding area. Kelowna's oldest shopping centre and first mall in the B.C. Interior, Shops Capri, opened the summer of 1959 on the site of some former orchards. It was a Capozzi family venture with an original cost of $2 million. (The mall was built on part of the Pridham Orchard property. The name Capri is a combination of Capozzi and Pridham.) The project included a grocery store, a drive-in, department store, barber, bank and medical clinic. Initially there were concerns that the project would be a flop because of the considerable distance from Kelowna's town core. The Capri Hotel was built a few years later after Glenmore residents voted to allow a liquor licence. During the mid-1950's, the municipality of Glenmore, then separate from Kelowna, had voted to keep the town 'dry'.
