Salmon Arm business owners and hospital staff savouring perks of automation

Having people in town that are supporting each other, it makes all the difference for small businesses'

"This is the best coffee IÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™ve ever had out of a completely automated setup. ItÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s very very good."

One might not expect to hear such high praise about a hot beverage from a vending machine, especially from the owners of an independent coffee shop that has brewed a strong reputation around its high-quality products and service. But Anvil Coffee Collective's Shelby Rutschmann and Destini Cogbill shared the above sentiment, equally impressed by the coffee served from a recent addition to Shuswap Lake General Hospital's cafeteria, a Touch Coffee Smart Bar. They may have been slightly biased, however, as Anvil provides the beans used in the machine.

"Obviously, nothing takes the place of a live barista making your drink in front of youÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥¦ but itÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s really impressive what they can do with technology these days," continued Shelby.

The unusual pairing of a small-town coffee shop's product in a commercial vending machine was the big idea of another local entrepreneur, Damian Arnouse, a friend of the sisters and a fan of Anvil's coffee. Arnouse, who owns/operates Shuswap Home Detailing, said he was at the Kelowna hospital last September for a family member's surgery. While there, he saw the hospital had several of the Touch Coffee machines and how popular they were. Two months later Arnouse wound up purchasing two of the same machines.

"I thought they were really unique and they would do really well here in Salmon ArmÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥¦," said Arnouse, who began his foray into the coffee vending business with partner Ryan Synch, who looks after the "techie" aspects of the machines. "Ryan knows the inside and outside of this machine really well."

Selecting Anvil's coffee was a given for Arnouse.

"I consider them close friends and I would like to keep everything as local as possible, and it doesnÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™t get as local as just down the road to get our coffee beans Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥“ and I do believe they make one heck of a cup of coffee," said Arnouse. "I really enjoy their coffee and I know a lot of other people do as well."

Among those other people are Laura Horsthuis and fellow Interior Health staff at SLGH.

"We donÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™t have a fully functional cafeteria and we donÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™t have another coffee shop on site so that was a huge win for us, to be able to bring in something this simpleÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥¦," said Horsthuis. "The staff here love Anvil, so that was a win-win for us."

Horthuis said hospital patients and visitors are welcome to use the machine and cafeteria located on level 3. Beverages can be purchased by card tap or through the Monex Wallet app. Arnouse said a portion of all coffee sales goes to support the Shuswap Lake Health Care Auxiliary Society.

The coffee beans used in the machine are the same kind Anvil uses for espresso. Arnouse said the machine's beans are kept fresh and that he and Synch care for the machine daily, including an hour-long cleaning/sanitization on weekends.

"I take a lot of pride in everything I do. I want to make sure this is always running in top performance," said Arnouse "So does Ryan. ItÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s kind of his baby and we want to make sure itÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s looking good as well."

Destini and Shelby are grateful for the partnership with Arnouse, and seeing Salmon Arm businesses support one another.

"Having people in town that are supporting each other, it makes all the difference for small businesses," said Shelby.

Arnouse and Synch are still looking for a suitable location for their second machine, somewhere it will be a good fit. For information, email smrtcoffeeltd@gmail.com.
